Brightside & Wincobank Parish
We are two churches, St Margaret’s Brightside & St Thomas’ Wincobank, who work together as one parish, to follow Jesus and serve our local area in Sheffield.
– We are a Church of England parish within the Diocese of Sheffield. As a parish we have a generally open evangelical, and charismatic approach to our faith.

Our Church Buildings

St Margaret’s present church building was built in 1934. It is a listed Grade II building designed by Flockton and Son in the perpendicular revival style. It has a square, unbuttressed, south-east tower with a stepped crenellated parapet. Its memorials include a pedimented wooden war memorial with encaustic tile panels c1918 and a war memorial board, 1945.
St Margaret’s began life as a mission outreach to prisoners of war following World War 1 from St Thomas Brightside (which is now closed and used as a circus school). The present building was constructed in the 1930s and was extensively refurbished 30 years ago.

St Thomas is also a listed Grade II building built in 1876 designed again by Flockton and Abbot in the Gothic Revival Style. It has a square south tower with machicolated eaves, pyramidal roof a single bell chamber. Its memorials include a marble, slate and ashlar war memorial tablet with flanking columns c1920 and a wooden memorial panel c1945.
St Thomas was built to serve Wincobank, the growing village of back-to-back housing, built around court yards with houses all round a central space. The building has had two major changes in the last 30-35 years and completed major repair work in 2025.
The buildings need work to remain in a good state of maintenance. We are very grateful that charities like The Yorkshire Historical Church Trust and The Sheffield Church Burgesses Trust help preserve and maintain churches like ours for the enjoyment of many generations to come.
